The Anambra State Government and State Police Command denied the existence of Bakassi Boys in the state. Although Ikenga Tochukwu, the public relations officer of the State Police, insisted that the command was not aware of the team’s presence in the state, the Information and Public Illustration Commissioner C-Adinuba admitted that the Awka community had set up a safe anti-cult campaign, but did not oppose the Bakassi Boys.
Adinuba said, “There is nothing like Bakassi Boys in Anambra State. The true position is that the Awka community put up a vigilance group against cultists that terrorising the place for a long time.
“Because of the attacks on security operatives recently, some communities are now making private arrangements to secure themselves. So, that is what the Awka community did, but not with the Bakassi Boys.”
