Former governor of Rivers State has passed away in Abuja, News Week Nigeria reports
Nigeria has lost one of its prominent military figures and statesmen, Major General Godwin Osagie Abbe (Rtd.), who passed away on Saturday night in Abuja after a long illness.
Abbe, known for his distinguished service, was a former Minister of Defence and Interior.
He also served as a military governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States during his career.
Born on January 10, 1949, Abbe’s life was marked by notable accomplishments in both the military and public service.
He joined the Nigerian Army in 1967 and rose steadily through the ranks, holding key roles such as Battalion Commander, General Officer Commanding 2 Division, and Commander of the National War College.
In addition to his military achievements, Abbe contributed to Nigeria’s political landscape as a minister under the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s administration.
His legacy includes various national and international military decorations.
Abbe, who enjoyed hobbies such as squash, hunting, and masonry, was preparing to celebrate his 76th birthday next month.
