Breaking: Fubara Reacts to Suspension as Governor, Outlines Next Steps

In a significant political development, President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday evening declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing the need to restore stability and law and order.

During a national address, Tinubu announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months. To oversee the state’s administration, the President appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the interim administrator.

Following his suspension, Governor Fubara urged the people of Rivers State to remain united and peaceful. In a statement he personally signed, he reassured residents of his commitment to upholding democracy and ensuring the state’s continued progress.

“We will work with all relevant institutions to protect our democracy and keep Rivers State on the path of growth,” Fubara stated.

Reflecting on his time in office, he noted that despite various political hurdles, his primary focus had always been the well-being and development of the state.

Fubara emphasized that his decisions were always guided by constitutional duties, and even in the face of political conflicts, he remained dedicated to protecting lives and property while fostering progress in Rivers State.

The suspended governor also blamed some members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, whom he claimed were aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for obstructing his efforts to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling.

“At every turn, these Assembly members have hindered our efforts, making it difficult to achieve genuine peace and progress,” he asserted.

Despite the ongoing challenges, Fubara insisted that governance in the state had remained active. He highlighted that salaries were being paid, and key projects were still being executed to advance the state’s development.

Governor Fubara assured citizens that Rivers State remains safe and secure under his leadership. He also urged residents to maintain peace and obey the law during this critical period.

“Now more than ever, I encourage the people of Rivers to stay calm, patient, and law-abiding. We will continue to engage the necessary institutions to uphold democracy and ensure the state thrives,” he affirmed.

Ending his message on a hopeful note, Fubara called on Rivers residents to approach the situation with wisdom and resilience, expressing confidence in the state’s ability to withstand adversity and emerge stronger.
