Breaking: Obi Visits Lagos Prison, Shows Support for Teen Who Stood Before His Convoy

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has shown personal concern for Alabi Yusuf Quadri, the teenager who gained public attention after boldly standing in front of Obi’s campaign convoy during the election season. On Friday, April 11, Obi—through the Obidient Movement—paid a visit to the young boy being held at Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre in Apapa, Lagos.

The visit was confirmed by Yunusa Tanko, the interim national coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide. In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Tanko shared details and images from the visit.

“During the visit, he (Obi) connected with Quadri’s mother and sister, standing in solidarity with the family and expressing unwavering support during this difficult time,” Tanko wrote.

Alabi Yusuf Quadri first came into the public eye during the 2023 general election campaign, when he stood defiantly in front of Peter Obi’s convoy in Lagos—an act that went viral and earned him admiration from many.

Recently, reports began circulating that Quadri had been imprisoned. Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong later confirmed that the teenager had been in detention since January 2025, following a visit to the Kirikiri facility where Quadri is being held.

Alongside Tanko, several notable figures from the Obidient Movement were part of the visit. These included Morris Monye, the group’s interim director of mobilisation, and social justice advocate Moses Paul.

Earlier on the same day, Obi was also present at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where he addressed nursing students during the 28th Annual General Assembly of the National University Nursing Students’ Association (NUNSA). He was invited as the special guest of honour.

The former governor of Anambra State urged the students to strive for excellence and be driven by compassion and service in their careers. He praised the conference’s theme, “Empowering Nurses: A Catalyst for Sustainable Health Care in Africa,” as timely and significant.

Obi emphasized the urgent need to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system by addressing the shortage of qualified nurses.

“We also need to invest more in nursing internship programs to enable newly trained nurses to gain hands-on experience to function effectively in the health sector,” he stated in a post on his verified X account.

“By so doing, we will raise an army of well-trained nurses who productively contribute to our healthcare sector.”
