A Hartland Construction Company driver, Buhari for short, was shot dead by a gunman believed to be the kidnapper in Benin, the capital of Edo state, on Tuesday. Before kidnapping a foreign worker, two police officers on duty were also shot by armed men.
However, in the incident in the famous village of Ahor on the Benin-Auchi highway, police personnel survived the attack and their service rifles were intact. It is understood that the driver and the police came from the Benin airport, where they went to pick up the foreigners, the gunman suddenly appeared from the bushes and opened fire on his vehicle.
It was said that the driver died on the spot, two policemen were injured, and the foreigner was taken into the jungle by armed men. The unidentified foreigner was on vacation but returned to the country to resume work on Tuesday before being kidnapped.
The driver from Jattu, the local government district of Etsako West in the state, was immediately taken home and buried in accordance with Islamic rituals. The state police chief Philip Ogbadu, who confirmed the incident, said the two police officers survived the attack.
“It happened yesterday, the driver conveying a white man being escorted by two policemen were shot at, the driver died but the officers held on to their riffles and they survived.
“The only thing is that the white man was taken away,” Ogbadu said.
He explained that the kidnappers now use the style of opening fire immediately they sight a vehicle, to force the vehicle to a stop.
