A resident of Kano State, Nasiru Mukhtar, has been remanded by the State Shariah Court sitting at Kofar Kudu for allegedly assaulting Imam Malam Murtala Sulaiman during morning prayers at a mosque in the Tudunwada area.
Naturenex learnt that the incident occurred on October 22, 2024, around 5 am.
Mukhtar reportedly stormed the mosque, held the Imam by the neck, and slapped him multiple times before tearing his clothes and taking his microphone.
Following the altercation, the imam filed a complaint with the state police command, leading to Mukhtar’s arrest.
During the court proceedings, Mukhtar’s defence counsel requested bail, citing the need for further investigation.
However, the presiding judge, Malam Isah Rabi’u Gaya, ordered a psychiatric evaluation to assess the accused’s mental state.
The court adjourned the case until November 22, 2024, while the accused remains in custody.
Meanwhile, Professor Iliyasu Usman, an Igbo man, has been appointed as the Imam of the Abuja National Mosque.
Naturenex reports that Usman delivered his first khutbah (sermon) today during the Jumm’at prayer, signifying an important occasion for the Muslim community in Nigeria.
This appointment has been widely celebrated, particularly among the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON), which regards it as a reflection of Usman’s dedication to Islamic scholarship and leadership.
In a statement, SEMON commended the inclusivity demonstrated by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by the President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.
SEMON highlighted that this appointment represents not only a personal achievement for Usman but also a sacred responsibility to guide the Muslim community in worship and service to Allah.
The organization expressed optimism that his leadership would strengthen the Igbo Muslim community and promote unity within the broader Nigerian Muslim populace.
