Edo Tragedy: 16 Hunters Laid to Rest as Authorities Work to Prevent Retaliation

Mourning and tension gripped Uromi, Edo State, as the bodies of 16 lynched hunters were buried following a tragic mob attack. The victims, wrongfully accused of kidnapping, were set ablaze by an irate crowd after being found with firearms. The emotional burial drew a large gathering, particularly from the Hausa community, who condemned the killings and prayed for the deceased.

The horrific incident has prompted swift action from state authorities, with Governor Monday Okpebholo and the Ojuromi of Uromi condemning the attack and vowing justice. Security agencies have arrested 14 suspects connected to the lynching, while investigations remain ongoing to apprehend more culprits.

Amid fears of revenge attacks, northern governors have urged for calm and heightened security in their respective states. The Northern Governors Forum, under the leadership of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, has reassured citizens of peace and stability ahead of the Eid celebrations. Religious and community leaders have also been engaging in dialogue to prevent any further violence.

In response to growing concerns, states like Nasarawa and Borno have ramped up security, deploying law enforcement officers to maintain peace and order. Authorities have emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for any form of violent retaliation, warning that those caught inciting unrest will face legal consequences.
