El Rufai Was Banned From Holding Office For 10 Years For Exposing Corruption In Senate – Mike Ozekhome

Mike Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has shed light on the relationship between former Governor Nasir El-Rufai and Governor Uba Sani. He revealed that in 2005, Uba Sani reached out to him to defend El-Rufai in a legal case. He said El-Rufai had been banned from holding public office for 10 years by the Senate after he exposed corruption and bribery demands within the Senate.

In an interview with Channels TV, Ozekhome said El-Rufai’s actions angered the Senate, leading to his indictment and the subsequent ban. He said he took on the case pro bono and he successfully defended El-Rufai in court, getting the indictment and ban overturned at the Federal High Court in Abuja. He said the Senate appealed the case but he won at the Appeal Court. He said he would never have thought that El-Rufai and Governor Sani would ever fight.

In Ozekhome’s words: “El-Rufai was indicted by the Senate and banned from holding office for 10 years because he had exposed the then Senate concerning corruption and their demand for bribe. So the Senate got angry and then decided to ban him for 10 years. I went to court and got the indictment and the ban quashed at the federal high court in Abuja. They appealed and I went to the Appeal Court and won the case”
