Elder Statesman of Kano Emirate, Abbas Sanusi, Passes Away at 92

Abbas Sanusi, the longest-serving councillor and most senior member of the Kano Emirate Council, has passed away at the age of 92.

The late traditional leader, who held the title of Galadiman Kano, died on April 1 after battling a prolonged illness.

A respected figure within the emirate, Sanusi had been a member of the council since the late 1950s. His journey in traditional leadership began in 1959 when his father, Emir Sanusi I, appointed him as Sarkin Dawakin Tsakar Gida and district head of Ungogo.

In 1962, during the reign of Emir Muhammadu Inuwa, he was promoted to Dan Iyan Kano. Later, under Emir Ado Bayero, he was elevated to the rank of Wambai of Kano. His highest title, Galadiman Kano, was conferred on him during the first tenure of his nephew, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Born in Bichi in 1933, Abbas Sanusi started his formal education at Kofar Kudu Elementary School in 1944 before proceeding to Kano Middle School, now known as Rumfa College, in 1948.

One of his sons, Abdullahi Abbas, currently serves as the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

His funeral prayer is set to take place at the Emir’s Palace, Kofar Kudu, Kano, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
