Experts Reveal Nigerian States to Witness Red Moon on March 14

A rare lunar eclipse, often referred to as a blood moon, will be visible in various parts of the world on March 13 and 14, 2025. While some regions, such as North America, will witness the total eclipse, Nigeria will experience it partially on March 14, according to Timeanddate.com.

The partial lunar eclipse will be observable across all 36 states of Nigeria. Key cities expected to have a clear view include:

  • Abuja
  • Benin City
  • Enugu
  • Kaduna
  • Kano
  • Lagos
  • Port Harcourt

Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is safe to view with the naked eye without causing harm.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves directly between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow over the moon. Since the moon does not emit its own light, it reflects sunlight. When the Earth blocks this light, the moon takes on a reddish hue, creating what is commonly known as a blood moon.

For those in regions experiencing the total eclipse, the event is expected to last for about 65 minutes, according to Space.com.

Astronomer Franck Marchis from the SETI Institute described the upcoming event as a rare cosmic alignment, highlighting its significance as a reminder of Earth’s place in the universe.
