Fact check: Has FG Increased NYSC Corps Members’ Allowance to N77,000?

Reports have emerged online claiming the Nigerian government has increased remuneration for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. Nigerians who completed a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent under 30 are mandated by law to participate in the one-year NYSC scheme, currently receiving a monthly allowance of N33,000.

Following President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the new minimum wage of N70,000 in July, rumors circulated that corps members would receive at least N70,000 as their monthly allowance. However, an NYSC participant expressed hope for the alleged new pay, while another corps member believed the ‘news’ and explained the supposed reason behind the increment.

To verify the claim, a spot-check was conducted using MyAIFactChecker, a tool designed to counter misinformation. No credible media outlet has reported the alleged increment in corps members’ allowance. As of this report, there is no evidence to support the claim, as neither the federal government nor NYSC has released an official statement to that effect.
