FG Gives Latest Update On Nationwide Blackout

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that the restoration of the national grid, which collapsed on Monday, is nearly complete.

In a statement, the TCN reported that the grid experienced a partial disturbance on Monday, October 14, 2024, at around 6:48 PM and suffered a setback at around 10:24 AM today, Tuesday.

The Company stated that efforts to fully restore power are still in progress.

Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, confirmed in a press release that power supply has been restored to Abuja.

According to the statement, recovery began promptly with the Azura power station providing the initial restart.

Mbah stated that by Tuesday morning at around 10:24 AM, grid recovery had reached an advanced stage but encountered a minor setback, delaying full restoration.

Despite this, Mbah assured that the grid recovery process has advanced, with power now available to around 90% of TCN’s substations nationwide.

Additionally, the statement noted that the partial disturbance did not affect the Ibom Gas generating station, which remained isolated from the grid and continued to supply power to areas in the South-South region, including Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and the Itu 132kV transmission substation.

The statement read: “The statement said although the recovery of the grid commenced immediately, with Azura power station providing the blackstart, grid recovery reached advanced stages at about 10.24 am, today (Tuesday) when it encountered a challenge that caused a slight setback in the recovery process.

“The slight setback notwithstanding, Mbah said TCN continued with the grid recovery process, which has reached an advanced stage, ensuring bulk power availability to about 90% of its substations nationwide.”

Mbah added that a thorough investigation into the cause of the disturbance will be conducted once the grid is fully restored.
