FG Mandates Radio and TV stations to close down their twitter account.

The federal Government made it clear to the broadcasting companies such as Radio and TV stations to close down their twitter account from henceforth. This was made known by a statement released by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

NBC said the decision was as a result of the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining the corporate Existence of Nigeria.

Prof. Armstrong Idachaba who is the acting Director-general of the NBC gave the Directives on Monday in a statement labelled “Suspend Twitter Handle”

He said Consequent on the suspension of twitter in Nigeria over the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining the corporate existence of Nigeria. The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) directs all Broadcasting Stations in Nigeria to suspend the patronage of twitter immediately”

“in compliance to the directives above Broadcasting Stations are here by advised to de-install handles and desist from using twitter as a source of (UGC) information gathering for news and programs presentation especially phone-in

“Section 2(1) of the NBC act entrust the commission with responsibilities to ensure strict adherence to National Laws, Rules and Regulations”

Also Section 3.11.2 of the Nigerian Broadcasting code provides that the broadcaster shall ensure that law enforcement is upheld at all times in a matter depicting that law and order are socially superior to or more desirable to crime and anarchy”

“Attention is also drawn to section 5.6.3 of the Code which requires broadcasters to be mindful of materials that may cause disaffection, incite to panic or rift in the use of User Generated Content (UGC)”

“Note that it will be very unpatriotic for any broadcaster to continue to patronize the twitter as a source of its information therefore strict compliance is enjoined”
