Football fan kills referee in Kenyan after awarding controversial penalty

Following a disputed decision during a match in Gesabakwa, Kisii County, a Football Kenya Federation (FKF) referee was killed on Friday evening after a fan struck him.

A retired teacher, John Okwayo, was hired to be the assistant referee for a two-week football tournament funded by an area resident.

The incident occurred when a fan who is suspected to be not happy with his decision ran and kicked him on his chest in the second half while officiating.

Evans Mageka, Secretary of Kisii County Football Kenya Federation (FKF), said that Okwoyo died when he was rushed to the hospital for care, confirming the sad incident.

Police detained the suspect and took him to Masimba Police Station.

Mageka warned the organizers of the ongoing tournaments after the incident to stop all games in the area.

“As a federation, we were not aware of the tournament because we had stopped all the tournaments from being played. I condemn all those who have organized this tournament because they are illegal, we will take action on them, we have already banned Nyansabakwa pitch. We have never been told of his medical condition if he was sick or not and if so, they could not have allowed him to officiate any match.
