The Edo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) stated that it is necessary to use bicycles as a means of transportation to reduce traffic accidents (RTC).
FRSC commander in the state, Henry Benamaisia, stated this on Thursday at the event to commemorate the 2021 World Bicycle Day in the state with the theme; “Save the Cyclist”.
The United Nations (UN) designated June 3 as World Cycling Day to promote healthy lives among nations. Benamaisia stated that FRSC’s goal is to reduce RTC by 15% and the number of deaths by 20%, and supports the use of bicycles as a means of transportation.
He noted that people generally believe that the use of non-motorized transportation can not only reduce RTC, but also promote healthy living.
FRSC commander said that the advantages of bicycles include simple maintenance, reasonable price, reliability, environmental protection, promotion of fitness and promotion of health. He pointed out that some countries are formulating and revising existing policies to provide road infrastructure to maintain bicycle lanes and other convenient facilities to ensure riding safety.
Benamaisia said the FRSC and the Cycling Federation of Nigeria were working together to ensure that the programme of ensuring that people used bicycle as means of transportation to sustain healthy living becomes a reality.
