The Global Peace Index (GPI) has ranked Nigeria as the 8th least peaceful country in Africa. Nigeria ranks after South Sudan, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Libya, Central African Republic, Sudan and Mali.
Nigeria has also been ranked as 146 from 163 independent countries in the 2021 Global Peace Index.
The GPI rank charts ranged from very high, high, medium, low and very low. According to reports, Nigeria ranked low in state of peace chart after earning 2712 points.
This due to the fact that Nigeria are in the midst of various security crisis.
Boko haram and fatal incidents caused 1,606 and 125 deaths respectively. This means that Nigeria averaged 13 deaths in every violent incident by Boko Haram in 2020.
“Over the last year, the country has recorded further deteriorations in militarisation and ongoing conflict and an overall deterioration in peacefulness,” the report said.
The GPI opined that the COVID-19 was a catalyst for the unrest in sub-Saharan Africa.
In the GPI, Iceland are still the most peaceful country in the world. This has been the case since 2008. Also ranked top are, New Zealand, Denmark, Portugal and Slovenia. Among the most peaceful country in Africa are, Mairitus, Ghana, and Serrie Leone.
