Borussia Dortmund and Norway striker, Erling Haaland could possibly miss the 2020 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
This is because Norway have aired their sentiments over Qatar hosting the world cup. Norway’s players —Haaland included— have condemned Qatar’s human rights history as a reason for their disapproval.
Reports suggest that FIFA could place a ban on the Norwegian team if they boycott World Cup in Qartar as rumoured. The Norwegian national team are not involved in the ongoing Euro 2020. They have played some qualifying games for the World Cup.
Norway players, when warming up before a World Cup qualifiers, wore shirts tagged ‘Human Rights on and off the pitch.’
FIFA have keenly supported hosting the World Cup in Qatar. Norway might be sanctioned by football’s governing body if they boycott the competition in Qatar. Norway would miss the 2026 World Cup if this happens.
The Norwegian FA would conduct a vote this Sunday to make a final decision. However, a vote for boycotting the competition in Qatar means they miss the next one if FIFA sanctions them.
Haaland and Norway would wait until Sunday to know their World Cup fate.
Norway have already completed three World Cup qualifying games. They won against Gibraltar and Montenegro while losing to Turkey.
