“I Almost Gave Up” – Tinubu Reveals Moment of Doubt in 2023 Presidential Race

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has shared a candid reflection on a moment of doubt during his 2023 presidential campaign, revealing that he nearly withdrew from the race due to intense challenges.

Speaking at a special Iftar held in his honor at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their unwavering support, prayers, and encouragement. He acknowledged the difficulties he faced on his journey to the presidency and reiterated his commitment to national progress.

The event, attended by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the Federal Executive Council, and other dignitaries, also featured special prayers led by Dr. Abdulkadir Salman Sholagberu, the Imam of the National Mosque in Abuja.

Reflecting on a pivotal moment during his campaign, Tinubu recounted an encounter with a close relative who expressed skepticism about his chances, citing the economic hardship caused by the cash scarcity at the time. The President admitted that the conversation almost made him reconsider his candidacy but credited key supporters, including former Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari, for reinforcing his determination to continue.

Tinubu also spoke about his decision to remove fuel subsidies immediately after assuming office, describing it as a necessary but tough choice for Nigeria’s economic stability. He emphasized that true leadership requires making difficult decisions at the right time, even in the face of criticism.

Vice President Shettima praised Tinubu’s leadership. He noted that his bold reforms have laid the foundation for a more stable economic future. He also highlighted the President’s willingness to confront challenges that previous administrations avoided.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other dignitaries also commended Tinubu’s resilience, visionary leadership, and commitment to national unity. Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijjani, shared his personal experience of being appointed despite his past activism. He described Tinubu as a leader who values merit and competence over political differences.
