I Appeal for Forgiveness – Nnamdi Kanu

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has formally apologized to the Federal High Court, Justice Binta Nyako, and Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, over his conduct during the last court session in his ongoing trial on terrorism-related charges.

Expressing deep remorse, Kanu pleaded for forgiveness and assured the court that he would maintain good conduct throughout the proceedings.

His apology, delivered by his lead counsel and former Attorney General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi, SAN, acknowledged that his previous outburst was inappropriate.

In an emotionally charged speech, Kanu specifically asked for pardon from Justice Nyako and Awomolo, recognizing that his frustration had led him to make regrettable comments.

Agabi explained that, while Kanu had reasons to be upset, he should not have allowed anger to dictate his actions in court.

“In his anger, he criticized the Federal High Court, Justice Binta Nyako, the prosecutor, and even his own legal team,” Agabi stated.

“On his behalf, I sincerely apologize to Justice Binta Nyako—she did not deserve such an attack. I also extend an apology to Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, a highly respected legal practitioner, who was unjustly criticized.”

Kanu’s counsel further emphasized that, while his client is deeply committed to defending the Igbo people, differences in opinion should be addressed through peaceful dialogue rather than conflict.

“We may not always agree, but we must seek understanding and forgiveness. Let peace, not violence, guide us in resolving disputes,” he added.

In response, Chief Awomolo, SAN, stated that he was touched by Kanu’s appeal and had chosen to forgive him completely.

He clarified that, as a prosecutor, not a persecutor, his role is to ensure the fair and speedy resolution of the case, rather than to target any individual unfairly.

Further developments on the trial are expected in the coming days.
