Some unknown gunmen have reportedly kidnapped a former lawmaker, Joan Onyemaechi.
Reports obtained by Naturenex on Tuesday evening revealed that the former member of the House of Representatives was in her church, King Jesus and I, situated on Ogajifo Street, which is off DSB Road, when the assailants attacked.
Two officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the former lawmaker, and her driver were reportedly killed in the violent incident on Tuesday night in Asaba, the capital of Delta State.
It was gathered that the gunmen open fire on the security officials upon arriving the worship centre and immediately whisked away Onyemaechi and her children into an unknown location.
The PUNCH quoted local sources to have confirmed that a bullet accidentally hit an innocent bystander, who died immediately.
“The gunmen stormed the church and immediately shot at the police orderlies and the driver. They then drove the lawmaker away in her SUV, firing indiscriminately in the street. Unfortunately, a stray bullet hit a young man, who died on the spot,” a source reportedly said.
Onlyemaechi was the immediate past Commissioner for Technical Education during Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s term before stepping down to enable her younger brother to take over the leadership role in the council elections that just ended.
Upon being reached out to, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, acknowledged the kidnapping case but mentioned that the incident resulted in the deaths of just one police officer and another individual.
He said, “Only a police officer and one other were killed; I do not know if the other was the driver. They took only her.”
