Major Blackout Hits FCT: Supreme Court, NASS, Airport, and Other Key Areas Affected

Residents across several parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been left in darkness following a power outage announced by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

In a statement released on Monday, AEDC attributed the blackout to a technical fault on the feeder supplying electricity to affected areas.

The company assured residents that its technical team is working diligently to resolve the issue and restore power as soon as possible.

Areas impacted by the outage include Utako, Wuye, Jabi, the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NJI, NARSDA, NABDA, Lugbe Shoprite, Riverpark Estate, War College, Dunamis, NIGCOMSAT, and Nigeria-Korea Model School.

Also affected are Lugbe Primary, Zuma Steel, Kapwa Village, NIA Junior/Senior, Tipper Garage, Tudu Wada, Peace Village, Video Club, CRD, 1R, T-Pumpy Estate, New Site, Back of Dunamis, Jedo, and Forte Royal Estate.

Other critical locations experiencing power outages include Aso Drive, the National Security Adviser’s office, the National Assembly, the Supreme Court, Wubassy Barracks, Army War College, Mambila Barracks, Yaradua Barracks, Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), Niger Barracks, Lungi & Agu Irosi Barracks, and surrounding areas.

AEDC assured residents that efforts are underway to fix the fault, stating, “Our dedicated technical team is working tirelessly to restore power as quickly as possible.”

This outage comes just weeks after the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) carried out planned maintenance that led to a temporary power cut in parts of Abuja in February. At the time, the TCN explained that maintenance work was necessary on transformers at the Apo 132/33kV Transmission Substation, causing a seven-hour blackout in key areas, including the National Hospital, Garki, and Asokoro.

According to TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the temporary blackout was “unavoidable due to the inability of Abuja DisCo to receive bulk power supply during the maintenance period.”
