According to Vanguard, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, has urged the Nigerian federal government to reinstate the fuel subsidy due to the severe hardship caused by its removal. Speaking during a homily titled “Miracle of Open Doors” on Sunday, Mbaka warned that the country faces imminent danger from widespread suffering if the situation is not addressed.
Mbaka criticized the current approach, suggesting that the removal of the subsidy should not lead to increased wealth for governors while the general population endures hardship. He expressed concern that unchecked economic difficulties could lead to uncontrollable protests.
The priest called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to engage experts to help tackle the economic challenges and alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. He warned that failure to address these issues could provoke divine retribution, emphasizing that the “Hammer of God” will deal with those perpetuating economic injustice.
Mbaka lamented the country’s inability to fully leverage its natural and human resources, citing issues like high fuel prices, poor infrastructure, and ineffective policies. He criticized the banking sector’s high-interest rates, which he believes contribute to economic instability and increase crime.
He also highlighted the dire conditions faced by many Nigerians, such as the inability to afford basic necessities and healthcare. Mbaka urged that all leaders, regardless of political affiliation, must work together to avert the potential crisis.
He said, “The International Monetary Fund, IMF, has been asking them to come and borrow money, and they said no that they don’t need it. Nigeria is perpetually borrowing. Some of you may be blaming the present government, not knowing that they have been caged. The money the last government borrowed, I don’t think the present government can finish paying it. Remember, when they give you the money, you use what you have as collateral.
“I don’t know how many years of oil they will carry before we begin to enjoy our own. What we are passing through now is hunger. Famine is coming; I told you this many years ago. Don’t sit down in your house; open your door and enter the bush to farm, go out and do something; don’t wait for government to do things for you; otherwise, you’re looking for magic, but I am praying for miracle.
