A Legal Practitioner and Human Rights Activist, Mike Ozekhome, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has, in a video posted on Viable Television’s YouTube Channel, welcomed the change from the new National Anthem to the old one; as he recounted how he had also advocated in 2014 that the name, ‘Nigeria’ should also be changed to ‘Iregin’
According to the Legal Practitioner, the name does not reflect what the Nigerian State stands for or represents.
The Legal Practitioner had said, “Indeed, in that conference, I had also put a motion that we should change the name of Nigeria, which appears to to be a burden because of the circumstances it came into being, 8th January 1878, when Flora Louisa Shaw, a young British journalist gave her the name ‘Nigeria’ after Niger area. But both my proposals for the national – for the flag and a return to change the name Nigeria from ‘Nigeria’ to I ‘Iregin’; I made the proposal by reading it from right to left, say instead of Nigeria let’s call it ‘Iregin’ but that one was shut down, the one of the flag”
