The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State has voiced serious concerns over the alleged poisoning and theft of cattle belonging to its members in Agatu Local Government Area.
Chairman of MACBAN in the state, Risku Muhammed, disclosed over the weekend that more than 20 cows were poisoned in Ucha village on Saturday, while over 200 others were stolen last Thursday by suspected criminals.
Muhammed alleged that a local farmer lured a herder into feeding his cattle with poisoned rice chaff, leading to the deaths of 13 cows, while seven others are currently receiving veterinary care.
“I got a report from my members in Agatu LGA that a criminal who had laced rice chaff with poison invited one of our members to graze on it. Unfortunately, 13 cows died instantly, while a veterinary doctor is treating seven,” he stated.
He commended Agatu LGA Chairman, Melvin Ejeh, for his swift response to the crisis and for working alongside non-governmental organizations to compensate herders for past losses. He also lamented frequent attacks on herders in communities like Olegodege, Utigologwu, Egwuma, Akele, Okwtanobe, and Ucha.
Confirming the development, Ejeh stated that an investigation was underway and that a farmer had been apprehended in connection with the poisoning. He stressed that Agatu had been enjoying relative peace due to government-backed security efforts and vowed to prevent any attempt to disrupt harmony in the area.
“We have received complaints from Miyetti Allah, and an investigation is ongoing. Agatu has been enjoying peace due to the efforts of the Peace Committee, and we will not allow criminal elements to instigate a crisis,” Vanguard quoted him as saying.
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident, stating that authorities are investigating the matter and have already arrested a suspect.
She further acknowledged the presence of a Peace Committee dedicated to maintaining stability in Agatu LGA.
