The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has stated that it will not take a position on President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. The forum emphasized that its primary role is to promote unified policies and collaborate for sustainable socioeconomic development rather than engage in partisan disputes.
In a statement released on Saturday, the NGF’s Director General, Abdulateef Shittu, explained that the forum’s function is to facilitate cooperation among state governments rather than comment on politically charged issues.
“The forum is an umbrella body for subnational governments, focused on policy collaboration and national development. Engaging in divisive partisan debates is outside our mandate,” Shittu stated.
For nearly two years, Rivers State has faced political turmoil due to a power struggle between former Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara. The prolonged conflict led to a governance deadlock, prompting President Tinubu to intervene.
On Tuesday, Tinubu declared a state of emergency, leading to the suspension of Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and the entire State House of Assembly for six months. In their place, Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas was appointed as Sole Administrator to oversee the state’s affairs.
While maintaining its neutral stance, the NGF called for understanding and trust in the measures being taken to resolve the crisis in Rivers State.
“We believe appropriate institutions and mechanisms will be employed to address the situation,” the statement read.
The forum also highlighted its commitment to non-partisanship, acknowledging that past political divisions within the NGF had almost led to a fundamental split among its members.
“Taking sides on sensitive political matters could risk alienating some members and undermine the unity of the forum,” the statement noted.
Despite staying neutral on the emergency rule, the NGF reaffirmed its willingness to take strong positions on critical governance issues, including wages, taxation, education, and healthcare.
The statement concluded by emphasizing the forum’s dedication to working collaboratively for the advancement of governance and national development.
