Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, the minister of women’s affairs for Nigeria, has revealed that she visited Ruth Ogunleye, a female soldier who recently complained about sexual harassment in the military in a now-viral video.
The minister claimed to have visited Ruth’s rehabilitation centre earlier this week. Ohanenye said, “Aside from the evident improvement from my last visit to her, she was in excellent spirits and we interacted politely,” in a post on her X (formerly Twitter) page on Thursday.
In keeping with its purpose to advance the health and well-being of Nigerian women, she said, her ministry had sent out a “desk officer to monitor her rehabilitation.”
Sources informed Sahara Reporters that Ruth had been “arrested and imprisoned by military authorities, who allege she is.
One of the military sources informed SaharaReporters, “They arrested the female soldier (Ruth) and claimed she was receiving rehabilitation but left the senior male officers she pointedly accused of sexually abusing her alone.”
SaharaReporters revealed earlier last month that Ruth had been detained and transported by air from Lagos to Abuja.
“The woman who complained about sexual harassment in the military in the widely shared video has been arrested and flown to Abuja this morning. A senior military source told Sahara Reporters that she was flown out from Lagos to Abuja escorted by military police in muftis.
In the now-viral video, Ruth had voiced her concerns about senior army commanders threatening to kill her if she rejected their attempts on a sexual level.
