The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is set to appear before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on March 21, 2025, marking the beginning of a fresh trial.
This comes after Kanu previously challenged Justice Binta Nyako’s neutrality in his case, leading to her decision to step down. However, the Chief Judge of the Abuja Federal High Court initially rejected her recusal. In December 2024, Justice Nyako indefinitely adjourned the case, prompting Kanu to refuse to appear in court unless a new judge was assigned.
Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed that the legal team is prepared for the new trial. However, he noted that they have yet to receive the charges that will be presented before Justice Omotosho.
“It’s now official that Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu shall appear before a new judge on March 21, 2025. It’s a significant milestone, and we are fully prepared,” Ejimakor stated in an interview.
He added that all previous legal proceedings since Kanu’s arrest in 2015 would be reset, effectively starting the case from scratch. However, he expressed concern over the government’s practice of serving legal charges at the last minute, potentially limiting their ability to prepare adequately for the case.
Despite these challenges, Kanu’s legal team remains committed to ensuring a fair trial as they await formal details of the charges against him.
