The auxiliary nurse who treated late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has testified that he developed a reaction and started vomiting after receiving a tetanus injection.
Appearing before Justice C.A. Shotobi at the Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu, Lagos, on Friday, the nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, stated that she had briefly stepped out to get more medical supplies when she received a call that Mohbad was convulsing.
Ogedengbe explained that after administering the tetanus shot, Mohbad developed goosebumps. His wife, Omowunmi, reportedly assured her that this was a normal reaction for him.
She recounted that on September 12, 2024, she was contacted by Ayobami Sodiq, also known as Spending, to provide medical care for the singer. Upon arriving at his Lekki residence around 2:30 pm, she observed a swollen cut on his right hand. After confirming he had an ulcer, she opted to give him paracetamol instead of diclofenac.
Ogedengbe administered 4ml of paracetamol diluted with 1ml of water and a slow 10ml dose of ceftriaxone to treat bacterial infection. However, as the ceftriaxone was being injected, Mohbad became uncomfortable and went to vomit.
“After vomiting, he sat on the floor, and I noticed goosebumps on his body. I pointed it out to his wife, who said it was his usual reaction to injections,” she explained.
In the room at the time were Mohbad, Omowunmi, Ayobami, and Ogedengbe. Concerned about his reaction, the nurse asked Omowunmi why she had not mentioned his sensitivity to injections earlier.
“Omowunmi then took Mohbad to the bathroom and poured water on his head,” she added.
Realizing the situation was worsening, Ogedengbe and Ayobami rushed to get medication for the reaction. However, delays at the first pharmacy slowed them down.
“By the time we returned with the necessary hydrocortisone injection and saline infusion, Mohbad was outside the house, and preparations were being made to take him to the hospital,” she said.
Due to traffic and a lack of available vehicles, he was transported to the hospital on a motorcycle, where doctors later confirmed his death on arrival.
At the hospital, medical personnel initially hesitated to treat him, adding to the confusion.
After his passing, Mohbad’s body was taken home around 8 pm before they proceeded to the police station to obtain a death certificate. The case was first reported at the Orchid Lekki Police Station before being transferred to Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah.
Following cross-examinations by legal representatives of Mohbad’s family, Omowunmi, and the Lagos State government, the case was adjourned to March 21, 2024, for further hearing.
Meanwhile, in February 2025, the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions announced that Ogedengbe and Sodiq would face charges for reckless and negligent acts under Lagos State’s Criminal Law. However, the court cleared music artist Naira Marley, promoter Sam Larry, Primeboy, and Mohbad’s former manager, Opere Babatunde, of any wrongdoing.
