A recent visit by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Delta State has sparked widespread social media reactions after nursing students at the Delta State School of Nursing, Agbor, openly rejected her title as the “mother of the nation.”
During an event at the institution, the Master of Ceremony (MC) introduced the First Lady as the “mother of the nation” in a welcoming song. However, the students swiftly responded, rejecting the designation and instead referring to Tinubu as the MC’s mother. The moment was captured in a viral video that has since dominated online discussions.
The First Lady was in Delta State as part of her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), which focuses on free treatment programs for HIV/AIDS patients and other healthcare improvements. Her visit also included an engagement with the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council in Asaba, where she urged traditional leaders to support health awareness campaigns, particularly against female genital mutilation (FGM).
The students’ rejection of the First Lady’s title has been interpreted by many as a reflection of growing frustration among Nigerians over economic challenges and insecurity under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Rising living costs, food shortages, and economic instability have fueled public discontent, leading to moments like this where citizens express their dissatisfaction in public forums.
Despite the controversy, Oluremi Tinubu has remained steadfast in her advocacy efforts. Through the RHI, she has focused on improving healthcare services, empowering women, and supporting vulnerable communities. Her visit to Delta State also included the presentation of professional kits to the wives of South-South governors, who serve as RHI coordinators in their respective states.
While addressing a gathering at the State House in Abuja, the First Lady reassured Nigerians that the nation is on a path to recovery, urging patience and unity. She emphasized that the administration is committed to tackling national challenges and ensuring a brighter future.
During her visit, Tinubu also met with monarchs at the Traditional Rulers’ Council Chambers, including the Orodje of Okpe, Major General Felix Mujak Peruo (Rtd.). She sought their collaboration in spreading awareness about healthcare issues and social welfare programs under the Renewed Hope Initiative.
