NYSC Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye Apologizes for Calling Lagos a ‘Smelling State’

An NYSC member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, has publicly apologized for her remarks about Lagos, which sparked backlash. In a viral video, she described the state as having an unpleasant odor and also criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership.

Following the video’s circulation, Uguamaye claimed she received threats and was summoned to the NYSC Local Government Inspector (LGI) office in Eti-Osa for questioning.

In response to the controversy, she shared a statement on her TikTok page (@talktoraye) on March 17, 2025, expressing regret for any offense caused. She clarified that her comment was based on her personal experience as a visitor and was not meant to disrespect the state or its residents.

Uguamaye stated:

“I want to first of all say that I am sorry to those who were born and raised in Lagos. If my words offended you, I sincerely apologize.”

She explained that upon arriving in Lagos, she noticed a difference in the air quality compared to other places she had been.

“If the way I expressed myself triggered emotions or upset those who love their birth state, I truly regret that. My intention was never to insult Lagos or its people.”

Uguamaye revealed that she started a 30-day rant challenge to voice frustrations over Nigeria’s economic struggles and encourage others to speak out.

“My goal was to create at least 20 videos addressing issues in the country. I believed that by Day 20, more people would join in. But surprisingly, after just one video, many Nigerians resonated with my message.”
