The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has stated that he now gives a tithe of almost 90% and not the usual 10% recommendation in the Holy Bible.
Naturenex reports that Adeboye’s assertion follows speculations that he recommended Christians cease paying tithes.
Speaking during RCCG’s October Holy Ghost Service held on Saturday at Redemption City, located along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, Adeboye addressed the misinterpretations that arose from his recent remarks on the topic, which have ignited considerable debate among social media users.
He expressed that he had previously apologized for any statements regarding tithing that might have been misconstrued.
Nevertheless, he expressed astonishment at the rapid dissemination of false information online, which claimed he had advised against the payment of tithes.
“The issue of tithing became contentious, and I decided to apologize for anything I might have said wrong.
“Yet, within an hour, it was being circulated online that I said Christians should stop paying tithes,” Adeboye said.
He elaborated that he urged followers to contribute beyond the customary 10%, citing an experience at Kenneth Hagin’s church where an individual recounted how his financial circumstances enhanced after pledging to tithe 90% of his earnings.
He said, “Today, I’m close to giving 90%, but I am far from 10%. So, I said it is wrong to limit yourself to 10% when God can take you to a higher percentage.
“As you grow in the Lord, you should grow in praising Him, winning souls, and in giving. I said that for beginners, the minimum is what God calls 10%. I said, from now on, begin to increase what you give.
“Of all I said, the only thing they put on the internet is that Adeboye apologized, and therefore, people should no longer pay their tithes. I said 10% should be the minimum.”
