Peter Obi Dismisses APC Defection Rumours, Reaffirms Loyalty to Labour Party

Abuja, FCT — Labour Party stalwart and former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has firmly denied rumours suggesting he may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying he has no intention of joining the ruling party now or in the future.

The former Anambra State governor made the statement in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, following a viral report that claimed his name was mentioned during an APC event.

Obi described the claim as misleading and cautioned against linking him to any political manipulations or partisan propaganda. “I do not practice politics based on deceit or divisive tactics,” he said, emphasizing that his approach to governance has always been centered on integrity, transparency, and issue-based politics.

According to Obi, political parties should prioritize merit, competence, and compassion when assessing candidates — principles he believes are essential for transforming both Anambra State and the country at large.

Looking ahead to the upcoming Anambra State governorship election in 2025, Obi spoke about the importance of conducting fair and democratic primaries across all parties. He made particular reference to his former ally, Valentine Ozigbo, who recently aligned with the APC, urging that Ozigbo and others be judged on their track records and leadership abilities rather than political affiliations.

“As the state prepares for the November election, I sincerely hope that all political parties — including the Labour Party — will uphold internal democracy and ensure a credible selection process,” Obi wrote.

He continued, “This election is an opportunity for us to demonstrate genuine democratic values, which remain scarce in Nigeria today. I encourage all stakeholders to avoid divisive politics and instead embrace transparency and justice.”

Peter Obi’s comments come amid growing speculation about political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election. His public rejection of the APC affiliation aims to put those rumours to rest while reinforcing his commitment to the Labour Party and principled politics.
