Yunusa Tanko, Interim National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, has dismissed claims that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is preparing to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tanko’s remarks come in response to a statement by Adewole Adebayo, who contested the 2023 presidency under the SDP. Adebayo had recently suggested that the party was in discussions with several prominent politicians, including Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, with the intention of bringing them into the fold before the next election cycle.
However, speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday, April 7, 2025, Tanko reaffirmed that Obi remains a committed member of the Labour Party unless an official change is made.
“To the best of my knowledge, His Excellency Peter Obi is still with the Labour Party. That remains the case until anything contrary is formally announced,” Tanko stated.
He also addressed the internal issues within the Labour Party, revealing that the leadership would soon issue an official stance regarding the recent Supreme Court decision that removed Julius Abure as the party’s national chairman.
“There’s a scheduled meeting of the party’s leadership this week to clarify our position in light of the Supreme Court ruling. That meeting will provide guidance and bring clarity to ongoing matters,” Tanko added.
