The Bauchi State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has apprehended over 50 individuals, including women, in connection with the #EndBadGovernanceProtest held in the state capital.
Naija News reports that Nigerians stormed major streets on Thursday to protest the economic hardship and food scarcity.
However, the supposed peaceful protest turned violent in some places, with security operatives teargassing protesters.
The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi, CP Auwal Muhammad, while speaking with Channels Television on Thursday, noted that the arrests were executed due to violations of public order and unlawful gathering.
“Fifty-two individuals among the demonstrators were detained for exhibiting violent and disorderly conduct. They attempted to disrupt public peace contrary to our prior arrangements with them,” he stated.
Muhammad further noted that one police officer sustained injuries, alleging that the protesters became unruly, engaging in theft of mobile phones and vandalism across the city.
He indicated that the protesters, numbering over 3,000, regrouped after being dispersed and attempted to advance towards the Government House.
“They were stoning our policemen. They have injured some of our policemen so we had to act fast. The governor would have addressed them if they were not unruly.
“We acted professionally and we did not kill anybody. The protesters used women and children as shields but we were able to overcome and subdue them,” the CP said.
