Presidency Defends Emergency Rule in Rivers, Says Crisis Could Have Been Worse

Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare has justified President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, stating that it was a necessary step to prevent a worsening crisis.

In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Dare explained that Tinubu’s action was constitutional and supported by legal precedents. He emphasized that the President had engaged key stakeholders before making the decision.

“In times of urgent emergency, extraordinary measures must be taken. If not, trouble turns into calamity, and normal situations become abnormal,” Dare wrote.

Dare argued that Rivers State was descending into turmoil, with warring political factions unable to resolve their differences. He noted that intervention was necessary to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.

“The crisis in Rivers had escalated to a level where opposing parties could not find a resolution. It was President Tinubu’s responsibility, both legally and morally, to step in and restore order,” he explained.

While critics have suggested alternative measures, including avoiding the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the appointment of a sole administrator, Dare insisted that the President’s actions were within the constitutional framework.

Dare also dismissed claims that the emergency rule was a political maneuver, arguing that it was purely a constitutional necessity. He pointed out that those opposing the decision were ignoring legal provisions that empower the President to act in such situations.

“Some political opponents have created unnecessary panic, but their opposition is against the law itself, which clearly outlines the President’s authority in emergencies,” he stated.

The presidency maintained that Tinubu did not act arbitrarily, but rather followed the law to prevent a complete breakdown of governance in Rivers State.

“This was not a political move, but a necessary step to maintain stability. The President’s role is not to be a passive observer but to uphold constitutional integrity and national interest,” Dare concluded.
