The Anambra International Cargo airport is located in Umueri, a town in Anambra East local government council of the state. The construction of the airport project was launched on 11 April, 2017 by Anambra State Government heavily led by Governor Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano.
In Sept 2020, the state Governor reportedly said that the Cargo airport project will be officially opened in April 2021.
According to its specification, the project will gulp 1500 acres of land and will feature two runways, an aviation fuel facility, aircraft maintenance facility, business Park, international convention centre and airport hotel. It was gathered that the airport city project generated 1200 direct and 3600 indirect jobs while the project is estimated take a whopping sum of 2billion US dollars and the airport is being built through a partnership of Anambra State Government, Orient Petroleum Resources and Elite International Investments.

The Anambra State being the commercial hub of the old Eastern region is long overdue for an International Cargo airport, according to the Governor, sometimes ago last year, during lockdown of commercial activities and other activities due to COVID-19 pandemic, said that the 63 major markets in the State will be shut down, telling you the volume of commercial activities in the state.
