A bill seeking to create Tiga State from the current Kano State is set for presentation in the Senate. Titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (Creation of Tiga State) Bill, 2024,” the bill is sponsored by Senator Kawu Sumaiman AbdulRahman (Kano South).

Kano State, known for its significant voting population, has 44 local government areas. Given Kano’s prominence in Nigeria’s political landscape, the proposal to create Tiga State is a noteworthy development.

The bill was scheduled for introduction on the Senate floor on Wednesday for its first reading. However, the Senate adjourned plenary in honour of Hon. Olaide Adewale Akinremi, a member of the House of Representatives who passed away at the age of 51. The bill has now been listed on the Order Paper for Thursday’s session following the adjournment.

Kano is located in Nigeria’s North West region, which already has the highest number of states compared to other geopolitical zones in the country. Specifically, the North West has seven states, while the North East, North Central, South-South, and South West zones each have six states. The South East has five states.

Agitations for the creation of an additional state in the Southeast region are also ongoing, highlighting the broader discussions about state creation and regional representation in Nigeria.
