Port Harcourt, Rivers – The Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed optimism that Governor Siminalayi Fubara will repent from his sins after the Supreme Court judgment. The House made this known on Friday, February 28, at the meeting it conveyed following the apex court verdict.
The Assembly commended the Supreme Court justices for their well-considered judgments. The ruling affirmed Martin Chike Amaewhule as the current Speaker of the assembly.
Rivers lawmakers speak on Supreme Court judgment
Speaking at the assembly, the leader of the House, Major Jackson, informed his colleagues of the Supreme Court decision, which validated their position and ordered them to immediately resume plenary.
Martins Wachukwu, a special assistant on media to the speaker, said in a statement that Jack noted that the Supreme Court has ordered that the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) should stop releasing funds to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration until the budged is properly presented to the properly constituted House.
The apex court also nullified the local government elections Governor Fubara oversaw in October 2024 and declared them illegal.
Amaewhule reacts to Supreme Court verdict
Speaking on the verdict, the Speaker Amaewhule said that the judgment is a victory for democracy and the rule of law. He noted that the Supreme Court had proven him and other members right when they posited that Governor Fubara was running a criminal administration, when his commissioners were not screened by the house, and the appropriation bill was not properly presented.
Amaewhule then expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court justices, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, the Rivers state political leaders, colleagues in the assembly and all who contributed to the restoration of democratic principles and ethos in the oil rich state.
Legit.ng recall that the Rivers state House of Assembly was divided into factions over the rift between Governor Fubara and the immediate past governor of the state, Wike. While the majority of the lawmakers are on the side of Wike, the governor had four lawmakers on his side. They were the ones who screened the commissioners and passed the budget.
