Tinubu’s Government Responds as Obasanjo Calls Buhari’s Tenure the Worst for Corruption

Obasanjo Criticizes Lagos-Calabar Highway Project

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has strongly criticized the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, describing the N15.6 trillion initiative as wasteful and corrupt.

In his new book, Nigeria: Past and Future, Obasanjo expressed concerns that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government may surpass Buhari’s administration in corruption and misgovernance.

Obasanjo also took issue with the N21 billion official residence being built for Vice President Kashim Shettima, arguing that it reflects misplaced priorities and could serve as a means to misappropriate public funds.

Presidency Dismisses Obasanjo’s Allegations

Reacting to Obasanjo’s claims, Presidential aide Temitope Ajayi accused the former president of portraying himself as the only authority on Nigeria’s progress.

Ajayi wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) page:
“If, as President for eight years, Obasanjo couldn’t fix Lagos-Ibadan Expressway or Lagos-Abeokuta road, we cannot take his views on the Lagos-Calabar Highway as well-informed.”

Similarly, Minister of Works David Umahi defended the project, stating:
“The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is not wasteful or corrupt. People will always criticize, but the benefits and cost analysis prove otherwise. Over 70% of the work is done, and this project will bring prosperity to Nigerians.”

Concerns Over the Project’s Cost and Award Process

The 700-kilometer highway, a key project championed by Umahi, is estimated to cost N4.93 billion per kilometer, with an initial allocation of N1.06 trillion for the pilot phase.

However, concerns have been raised over the contract’s award to Hitech Construction Company, owned by Gilbert Chagoury, a known associate of President Tinubu.

Critics, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have questioned the lack of competitive bidding in the selection process.
