In a targeted Israeli airstrike in Beirut, top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr was killed, according to Times of Israel. An unnamed Hezbollah official told The Wall Street Journal that Shukr had received a phone call from an unknown individual instructing him to go to the seventh floor of a residential building.
While the strike was going on, Shukr was in his second-floor office. The official made the observation that the call that sent him scurrying up five stories to his apartment probably made it easier for Israel to hit him. Both Hezbollah and Iran are looking into the intelligence lapse that resulted in Shukr’s murder because of the alarms raised by this episode.
It has been suggested that the sophisticated hacking capabilities and cutting-edge technology of Israel may have managed to breach Hezbollah’s counter surveillance systems, enabling the Israeli Defense Forces to precisely follow Shukr’s whereabouts.
Shukr, his wife, two other ladies, and two children were all killed in the airstrike that happened on July 30. Twelve innocent children and teenagers were killed in a rocket attack on the northern village of Majdal Shams by Hezbollah a few days ago, prompting this operation.
A major player associated with multiple assaults against Israel, Shukr was well-known for his substantial participation in Hezbollah’s military activities. The murder of this individual has escalated tensions in the region and represents a turning point in the war between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.
There is a risk that this targeted strike may further inflame tensions and bloodshed in the region as Hezbollah and Iranian authorities investigate Shukr’s death.
