At a meeting called by Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama on Monday, June 7, the federal government laid out the only conditions to end Nigeria’s Twitter ban. Speaking with foreign diplomats in Abuja, Onyeama said that for President Buhari’s government, the condition is to use the app responsibly in the country. The minister, frankly speaking, the government is not saying that Twitter is threatening Nigeria, but that the website should not be used to destabilize the government or create tensions.
“The condition would be responsible use of the social media and that really has to be it. We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing.
“Why we have taken this measure is to stop them to be used as platforms for destabilisation and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities.”
