UDC Urges Tinubu to Declare State of Emergency in Zamfara Amid Worsening Crisis

The United Democratic Coalition (UDC) has urged President Bola Tinubu to immediately declare a state of emergency in Zamfara State due to escalating violence and a breakdown of governance. The group cites worsening insecurity and what it describes as an attack on democracy following the suspension of 10 state lawmakers.

In a statement issued on Friday, April 4, UDC President Abdulrahman Danladi described Zamfara as “under siege,” highlighting the growing influence of armed groups terrorizing communities. He criticized state authorities for failing to ensure citizens’ safety, leaving them vulnerable to attacks.

“The security situation in Zamfara has deteriorated significantly. Armed groups operate without restraint, and the people are left defenseless while those in power remain inactive. Worse still, lawmakers attempting to raise these issues have been silenced,” Danladi stated.

The coalition condemned the recent suspension of 10 members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, who had voiced concerns over insecurity and illegal mining. UDC views their removal as a suppression of democracy, arguing that elected representatives should be free to advocate for their constituents.

“This is more than lawlessness; it is an abuse of power. These lawmakers were elected to serve the people, yet they are being sidelined for speaking out,” Danladi said.

He also referenced political instability in Rivers State, where a similar legislative crisis prompted discussions about federal intervention. He questioned why Zamfara’s situation has not received the same level of concern.

“If emergency rule was considered for Rivers due to a legislative crisis, why should Zamfara—with 10 suspended lawmakers and rising violence—be ignored? The federal government must act to protect democracy and restore order,” Danladi asserted.

The UDC is advocating for a six-month state of emergency to allow security forces to address the crisis effectively. It also demands the reinstatement of the suspended lawmakers and an investigation into alleged executive interference in the legislative process.

“The people of Zamfara are trapped between relentless violence and a government that has failed to protect them. Leadership and decisive action are needed now,” Danladi concluded.
