A yet-to-be-ascertained number of students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have been reportedly trapped in a collapse of a storey-building structure.

Naturenex learned that the event occurred on Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, an area close to the university that housed many students.

Reports revealed that the structure fell apart due to intense rainfall early Saturday morning in Benin City, Edo State.

Rescue efforts are still in progress at the moment this report was submitted.

SaharaReporters quoted a student of the varsity who spoke on condition of anonymity to have mentioned that a university rescue squad was able to free some of the individuals trapped inside, although many were seriously hurt.

He further stated that the injured were quickly taken to the hospital for immediate medical care.

“The rescue team is still searching for one victim who remains trapped inside the rubble. It was reported that the victim called from inside the building, pleading for help, and efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue them,” the student said.

The varsity dean is said to have visited the incident scene and led the rescue operations in collaboration with the school’s staff.

However, the university administration has not issued a formal announcement regarding the reason for the collapse or the overall number of people impacted by the event.
