Eyewitness Reports Describe Chaos in Watt Market Area
A tragic incident unfolded in the Watt Market area of Calabar, Cross River State, on Sunday as a police officer reportedly opened fire on civilians, resulting in multiple casualties.
According to eyewitnesses, the officer, believed to be an inspector, suddenly stepped out of a nearby police station with his weapon and began shooting indiscriminately.
A video circulating on social media, shared by an 𝕏 account, Official Calabar Gist, captured one of the victims lying lifeless on the ground. The account claimed that several traders were killed, while others sustained injuries.
“Tragic scenes in Calabar this Sunday morning! A police inspector allegedly lost control and opened fire on traders, killing some and injuring others,” the social media post stated.
Police Confirm Incident, Say Officer is in Custody
The Cross River State Police Command has acknowledged the incident via its official 𝕏 handle. However, the statement did not disclose details regarding the number of casualties or the identity of the officer involved.
“The situation has been brought under control, and the inspector responsible has been taken into custody. A detailed press release will be issued soon,” the statement read.
As of now, the police have yet to provide further clarification on the motive behind the shooting or confirm the exact number of victims.
Authorities are expected to release an official report as investigations continue.
