Lai Mohammed, the Minister for Information and Culture, in Nigeria earlier today made an announcement, that we are seeking law to regulate social media during a public hearing to amend the National Broadcasting Act, and was convened by the committee on ethics, orientation, moral and values.

The section B of the NBC act which states that: “(1) The NBC have the sole responsibility of processing, establishing, considering and approval of applications to establish or own radio or TV stations or any medium of broadcasting.
” He said that, the NBC should regulate all media and broadcasting services, monitor content in the country and law to regulate social media should be sought.
This is coming after the microblogging app Twitter was suspended in Nigeria, by Lai Mohammed and federal Government.
Recall, that recently all social media platforms and broadcasting service in the Federation was compelled to get a broadcasting license. But was kicked against during the public hearing, saying the National Broadcasting Commission should be made independent and given freedom from the minister.
Akin Akingbulu, the executive director for Media and Society institution made a contribution said the NBC should stop receiving Order from the Lai Muhammed.
The power vested to the Minister according to the constitution should be amended and freedom should be given to the Commission.
