Tafawa Balewa once said in 1948 during a campaign in Lagos that Since 1914 the British Government has been trying to make Nigeria into one country, but the Nigerian people themselves are historically different in their backgrounds, in their religious beliefs and customs and do not show themselves any sign of willingness to unite… Nigerian unity is only a British intention for the country.
From the onset of the creation of the state of Nigeria till date, this nation doesn’t seem like we can all co-exist. Nigeria has not been working and is not working.
One problem that has been readily identified is that the country is just too big, and too concentrated in Abuja to run properly. This is true. It is also true that China, Canada, the United States, are bigger, and are making progress. It is also true that India, who started along the path to nationhood at a similar time as we did, is making progress in some form. However, this does not stop the arguments that we need to break Nigeria up.
In Nigeria today, many of the minority ethnic groups feel that they have been sidelined from participating in the running of the affairs of the nation. Even some of the major ethnic groups feel that the ones in power are not being fair to them as they too are sidelined from the running of the state. Worthy of mention, majority of the ministerial positions are occupied by the northerners and this has brought about an unrest in the society as there is not full participation of various ethnic group in the running of the government.
The current ethnic unrest we are experiencing is as a result of bringing together a set of people that were actually doing well on their own. The Igbos, Hausa and Yoruba were doing well individually until the British brought us together and since then it has been nothing but war, prejudice and hate; killing one another at any slightest provocation.
The earlier the government understand that we all were not meant to co-exist together and did something to address the issue, the better it will be for all of us because not only will it bring peace, it will go a long way to stop the incessant attacks and killings that is going on the country today
