Why I Dropped Criminal Defamation Against Dele Farotimi – Afe Babalola

According to Vanguard, Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, announced his decision to drop the criminal defamation case against activist Dele Farotimi after interventions by Yoruba leaders. “The Ewi of Ado, former President Obasanjo, and Bishop Kukah pleaded with me, but I refused,” he said. “However, when the Ooni of Ife came, I couldn’t say no. There’s nothing to gain from imprisoning Farotimi or seeking damages. I’m not after wealth but integrity. On this occasion, I say yes.”

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, welcomed the resolution, describing it as a triumph of peaceful conflict resolution. “This outcome shows the power of dialogue,” Obi said through his media aide. “My visit to Chief Babalola was to encourage harmony, not to beg for pardon. His decision reflects his commitment to peace.”

Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-political group, praised Babalola and the monarchs who mediated. “Babalola has shown true Yoruba values by respecting the intervention of traditional rulers,” said Afenifere spokesperson Jare Ajayi. “The Ooni and other monarchs acted wisely to preserve peace.”

Babalola emphasized the importance of Yoruba tradition in resolving disputes. “The Oba’s word has always been law,” he said. His decision and the monarchs’ role highlight the enduring power of tradition in fostering unity.
