In recent months, incidents of domestic violence have been on the rise in Nigeria, sparking alarm among citizens and rights advocates. Between 2019 and 2024, the country witnessed an increase in reports of physical assault and violence within homes, with January 2025 alone seeing several disturbing cases.

Commenting on the troubling trend, psychologist Tony Omeluko linked it to the worsening economic crisis and its toll on mental health. He remarked, “Nigerians and other African countries don’t care much about people’s mental health. A lot of Nigerians are currently sick mentally due to the hardship.”
