Adewole Adebayo, who contested in the 2023 presidential election under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has suggested he might be open to stepping down for Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential flag bearer in the same election, ahead of the 2027 polls.
Adebayo revealed this during a video interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. The discussion, closely followed by Legit.ng, centered on the possible realignment of opposition forces ahead of the next general election.
Speaking on Obi’s political conduct, Adebayo expressed admiration, saying: “I like what he (Obi) is doing. He is serious-minded. He is having meaningful discussion, quiet discussion, honourable discussion.”
When asked whether he would eventually step aside for Peter Obi, Adebayo responded: “That will come later, but from what I see, I like what he’s doing.”
According to Legit.ng, conversations are ongoing among various opposition party leaders, including those from Adebayo’s SDP and Peter Obi’s Labour Party, as they explore the possibility of joining forces to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
In a recent comment, Peter Obi explained the motive behind his participation in the growing coalition of opposition parties preparing for the next election. He clarified that his focus isn’t on political appointments or positions, but on delivering good governance to Nigerians.
Obi stated: “I’m in coalition against hunger, a coalition against poverty, a coalition against ill health, politics for me is not about positions, it is about doing the right thing.”
Addressing speculations about political negotiations, the former Anambra governor added: “Whatever you make of it (the report), I can tell you that, I Peter, have told you where I stand. I just came back (from Rome), I didn’t talk about politics, I’m talking about the education of these children. I’m not talking about positions.
“In this country, we are not talking about what we should be talking about. What we should be talking about is how we are going to educate our children.”
