The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has officially introduced the NIN Authentication Service, widely known as NINAuth, to provide Nigerians with a more secure and efficient means of verifying identities while accessing government-related services.
This new system comes on the heels of President Bola Tinubu’s directive mandating the adoption of NIN-based authentication across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in the country — a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s digital identity infrastructure.
Strengthening Identity Security And Service Access
According to NIMC, the NINAuth platform was created to boost data security, offer individuals greater control over how their personal information is managed, and simplify access to crucial services like SIM registration, immigration procedures, tax submissions, government intervention initiatives, and driver’s licence renewals.
Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, explained that this initiative ties directly into the Commission’s mission of managing a reliable and comprehensive digital identity system for Nigerians and legal residents. He further noted that the service forms part of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, specifically designed to reinforce Nigeria’s national identity systems.
Prioritising User Consent And Data Protection
The newly launched NIMC NINAuth application serves as the official gateway to interface with NIMC’s backend systems. A standout feature of this platform is its emphasis on safeguarding personal data while granting users direct control over who can access their information.
The Commission assured the public that the service fosters transparency, trust, and respect for individual privacy by making it mandatory for explicit user consent to be obtained before any personal details are shared for Know Your Customer (KYC) processes or identity verification purposes.
Highlights Of NINAuth’s Key Features
Some of the core advantages of the NINAuth service include:
- Enhanced Security: Providing extra protection for personal data against unauthorised access.
- User Control: Giving Nigerians the ability to decide how and when their data is shared.
- Seamless Access: Allowing for secure single sign-on to easily interact with various services.
Dr. Adegoke added that the NINAuth service reaffirms NIMC’s dedication to providing modern, secure, and efficient digital identity solutions in Nigeria. He pointed out that it also supports instant identity verification, promoting better service delivery, harmonising national databases, and ensuring compliance with Nigeria’s identity management policies.
How Nigerians Can Use The NINAuth Platform
To benefit from this service, Nigerians are advised to download the NINAuth App, which is now available on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Once installed, the app will serve as the exclusive channel for all identity verification activities that require NIN-based authentication.
